Behind the Scenes of a Portrait Session
A portrait session is much more than just clicking a camera shutter. It's an art that combines preparation, technique, and human connection. In this article, I'll take you behind the scenes to discover all the secrets of a successful portrait session.
Preparation: 50% of Success
Initial Communication
Everything begins well before the big day. The first conversation with my client is crucial:
- Understand their needs: Photo usage, desired style, constraints
- Define the atmosphere: Professional, relaxed, artistic?
- Choose the location: Studio, outdoor, personal office?
- Prepare the brief: Outfits, accessories, hair, makeup
This preparation helps avoid surprises and ensures everyone is aligned with the final vision.
Technical Equipment
For a portrait session, my basic equipment includes:
- Camera: Full-frame with 50mm, 85mm, 135mm prime lenses
- Lighting: 2-3 flashes with modifiers (softbox, umbrella)
- Reflectors: To control shadows and light
- Tripod: For maximum stability
- Trigger: To fire flashes remotely
The Big Day: The Magic Happens
Building Trust
The first few minutes are dedicated to creating a relaxed atmosphere:
- Informal discussion to break the ice
- Process explanation and session flow
- First test shots to get comfortable with the camera
- Background music if appropriate for the desired style
A relaxed person always photographs better!
Lighting Technique
I generally work with three main lighting patterns:
Rembrandt Lighting
- Main light at 45° from the subject
- Creates a characteristic light triangle on the cheek
- Ideal for male portraits and dramatic atmosphere
Butterfly Lighting
- Direct light in front and above the subject
- Creates a butterfly-shaped shadow under the nose
- Perfect for female portraits and fashion
Split Lighting
- Light at 90° from one side of the face
- Creates strong contrast between shadow and light
- Very expressive for artistic portraits
Post-Production: The Finishing Touch
Selective Culling
After the session, hundreds of photos are taken. My culling process:
- First quick pass: Eliminate blurry, closed eyes
- Second pass: Select best expressions
- Finalization: Choose the 10-20 final photos
Artistic Retouching
Retouching remains natural and subtle:
- Exposure correction and white balance
- Skin cleanup: temporary removal of imperfections
- Contrast enhancement to add punch
- Optimal cropping for each photo
Delivery: The Pleasurable Moment
Delivery generally occurs 7-10 days after the session:
- Private online gallery with password
- High and low resolution photos
- Usage tips for each format
- Client follow-up to ensure satisfaction
Tips for Future Clients
If you're planning a portrait session, here are my recommendations:
- Book in advance: 2-3 weeks for preparation
- Prepare 2-3 different outfits
- Rest well the night before: guaranteed freshness
- Bring accessories: glasses, jewelry, personal items
- Trust the photographer to guide you
A portrait session is a collaborative experience. Your comfort and confidence are the secret ingredients for successful photos!
